Son is applying ED to Johns Hopkins which “recommends” subject tests, but not required. Should he submit his 700 math 2 and 710 bio-m? Math was taken last month and bio taken in 9th grade. He is interested in Economics. He has a heavy load this year, plus he is in full swing in his sport, so will not have time to study for future subject tests. His ACT comp is 34, but only an 8 on the writing. He is not submiting his SAT at all. I know some schools say if you take ACT with writing, you don’t have to submit subject tests. Will these scores be neutral or negative? We don’t have financial excuse to not take subject tests. No big hooks
His AP exam scores are a mixed bag: Calc ab 5, Stats 5, Physics 1 4, Chem 4, Compsci 4, World 4, Spanish 3, Eng lang 3 Bio 3. Perhaps he should not list the 3s?
As an Econ major, I think you’re okay not sending the subject tests:
Johns Hopkins requires the SAT or ACT. Students may submit Subject Tests as a “way to demonstrate an academic strength . . . Engineering applicants are encouraged to submit Math Level 2 and one science.”
Thank you for your response. Just to clarify…Those scores, although not required for econ major are still too low to submit? Was wondering if there are brownie points for at least “trying”
I would submit them, as they are OK, and not submitting them will make it look like they are worse. Hopkins may be a reach based on all the information you have provided here.
For SAT Subject Tests I have Johns Hopkins down as optional rather than recommended, so I don’t see any advantage in submitting the scores for an Econ major.
Do whatever you want, but few people would not submit 740s on subject tests or 4s on AP exams, so not submitting 710s and 3s makes it looks like it is even worse.
Since you don’t have hooks, and the scores are a little low, it is probably a marginal application for Hopkins, but not showing them any subject tests will just make the it worse. I am sure he will get into an excellent school though.
