Submit deposit while still considering other schools?

Just dorm choice. But, he would like to be in of one of their community type dorms - one for his major or for the honors college. Better location, air conditioning, maybe a community more focused on their studies than partying (maybe). There are other perks to those dorms as well. Pretty sure he’s guaranteed a place in a dorm, though.

Both of my sons lived in Honors dorms freshman year. Pretty much guaranteed once you get into an honors program. I think both dorms were quieter than the others on campus.

LLC’s are pretty much the same. Get in and you have a spot. Some pretty interesting LLC’s out there. Definitely look at them.

What you’re saying is - you want peace of mind.

So I’d verify that when you register, does in fact, determine the order you choose.

And if so, since you’re not concerned with the $200, I’d go for it.

You have until May 1 to give your decision to any school, sans ED.

So go for the peace of mind!!!

To follow up, your take seems a good one in this instance. At a recent admissions event, another parent point blank asked about submitting an enrollment deposit to get housing choice access before they’ve made a final decision. Admissions whole heartedly gave their blessing and reminded that those deposits can be returned up until June 1. Obviously, this will vary from school to school, but it makes our decision pretty easy given our situations.

Thanks again for your input!

My take is that if they are offering refunds, it is fine. It would not surprise me if colleges, in part, use early housing apps as a sort of foot-in-the-door marketing tool: the student makes choices, visualizes self on campus and so is more likely to commit at the deadline.

Agree with @tsbna44 …not all schools assign housing according to deposit date. I’m not sure the response you were given by the one school means that he can apply NOW, and that assignments are done by deposit date. Just check with those schools and this whole issue might not be an issue!
