Although colleges say that they view the SAT and ACT equally, I've heard from many people that most colleges (especially the Ivies) prefer the SAT. I scored a 740M, 700CR, and 770W for a 2210 on the SAT and a 34 on the ACT. What should I show to colleges, specifically those in the Ivy League, considering that my scores are in the same ballpark on the concordance table?

ACT because your CR+M is only 1440, where a 34 is way better than that.

Collegegirl, while you’re searching for and applying to colleges, a lot of people who really mean well will offer you advice that’s out of date, utterly false, or just plain made up. This is one of those times.

No college or university in the U.S. prefers the SAT over the ACT. Some did a generation ago; when I applied to Yale and Harvard, they required SAT scores and wouldn’t accept ACT scores in lieu of them. But a lot has happened since I applied to college: microwave ovens and ATMs have become ubiquitous; people have computers in their homes–often many of them (computers, I mean, although some folks have multiple homes, too); cell phones have become inexpensive, and they have shrunk in size (and then grown larger again as they’ve become smartphones). And in this brave new world, the big-brained folks at Harvard and Yale have learned how to interpret ACT scores. (It’s really not that hard–you did it in your initial post!)

Check out a couple of links I posted just a few days ago for another rising senior in this post: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/16097450-post11.html.

If I were you, I’d submit both. One set of scores validates the other.

You want to submit both. Kids get so hung up on this and its almost always in your best interest to submit all your scores. Schools will use the best one(s).

Congrats these are both good results. This is one part of your application you don’t have to worry about !

I don’t know why everyone tells you to submit both. It costs 11$ to send a score. Is everyone on CC made of money? Save yourself a dinner and just send your ACT. You can get a hot meal with soda with $11!

That $11 will be well spent particularly that would be only ~10% of the total cost for application anyway. It may cost you nothing extra if you need to submit SAT2 scores anyway. Schools will pick the better composite score of the two. And they will also look into section scores. When you submit both, you may have weakness in certain area that got compensated by the corresponding section in the other test. That does not mean they will superscore between the 2 tests, but they will give you the benefit of doubt when you made some careless mistake in one test.

billcsho, you make a great point that I never considered. While writing was my best section of the SAT, it was my worst part of my ACT. My math was a 35 and english was a 34 so that may compensate for a not so perfect CR and M score. I will most likely submit both. Thank you to everyone for your input!
