submitting a programming portfolio to admissions offices

I was wondering whether there are any past undergraduate applicants who submitted programming portfolios to admissions offices. I've developed software for a few years and have some substantial things to show for it, and was hoping someone could offer advice/pointers. I'm considering just reaching out directly to CS professors, because the general admissions office might completely disregard anything that I submit (seeing as a software portfolio's probably pretty uncommon). Thanks.
