Should I submit a supplemental rec (in addition to my two teachers and my counselor) if this rec is just another voucher for my personal traits/activities in general? Or should I not send one in if it will be like my counselor rec except more detailed about some of my activities? I would think that 4 recs is a little burdensome, and I've heard that supplemental recs are only good if it's from like a scientist mentor or something... Thanks!

It depends on the quality of the rec and it depends on the college. First, I would only include it if it really adds value to the portrayal of who you are. If it is repetitive or superficial - there is no point. I would also look at each college’s website. Some schools are very specific that they only want one rec. Some say they will not look at additional recs. So, if it is good quality and the college (generally smaller LACs) welcome supplemental letters - send it. Otherwise, not worth the effort.

^^ ok cool, that makes sense.
One more question: if a college accepts supplemental recs, could a friend write a one for you and send it in if it talks about a special circumstance in our relationship and something new? Has this ever been done before? Would it be frowned upon?

^^BUMP on the friend rec question.

It depends on the college, and calling would probably be best. Dartmouth requires a peer recommendation, so they’re pro-friend recs, but they probably wouldn’t want two recs from friends. At my UChicago info session, the adcom mentioned receiving a rec written by a friend.
