Submitting Applications In December

Hi,

I will be doing three SAT II's in December. Therefore, I will not have results to send in until the second last or last week of December. However, if I have everything else completed on the CommonApp, teacher recs, transcripts, etc. all compiled, can I send in my application and ask the CollegeBoard to send in my SAT II's scores when they arrive?

yes, if you are applying for regular admission. College admissions offices don’t start to review regular applications until well into Jan-Feb.

ON a related note, does submitting your application later in December decrease your chances of getting in?

it does not.

In general, what selter01 said is right, but if you’re applying to a school with rolling admissions (eg: the University of Michigan), where applicants are accepted as their applications are submitted, towards the end, when there are fewer places left, it can be somewhat more difficult to be accepted.

I know some schools only accept SAT scores no later than Nov, even for RD. Double check.

"At two other moments in the same information session, that Harvard admission officer said, “We read applications in the order in which they are received beginning on the 1st of December. The earlier 250 applications are more exciting to read than the later 1,000.” [there were laughs from the audience] and “I read about 1,200 essays last year. But I enjoy the last 250 less than the first 250, unless something really sings out.” "

What if I brought your attention to this quote from http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/588508-tips-college-admission-process.html

Would it change your ansewr in any way?

bump bump.

This is what I see on the Harvard website regarding admissions:

I suppose that if you submit late enough you might get shut out of the chance to interview, which might affect your admission chances.

I don’t believe for a second that the adcoms really “enjoy” the first 250 essays better than the last 250.

Most schools with ED or EA are getting 30-50% of their applications a month earlier than Harvard. They are able to spread out their workload over a longer period. I think it’s an administrative thing, and Harvard would simply like to spread out the workload over a longer period of time too.
