Did anybody submit art and get in? I'm applying regular decision and i'm torn between designing something (it will look sweet, but the message may be a bit more cliche) and writing an essay. I'm applying with the common app.

^not true at all don't know why'd you think that

I'm doing an essay+ photo thingy. The essay only acts to make sense of my idea however. The essay is truly the supplementary part of mine. I decided to do it because I was afraid I'd give them the wrong impression about what I was doing it without. :)

1. Respond to the following, using whatever space and medium you like.

If you could plan a days adventurestarting from your home and spending only around $10 (or 8, or ¥1,068, or Rs 435, etc.)where would you go, what would you do, and whom would you take with you?

I remember going to the Johns Hopkins admissions thing on campus and the guy himself said that art was sometimes submitted in place of an essay... I am not sure what you mean. I am doing art as my essay, meaning I am graphically depicting what I would write for the $10 essay.

the direction for johns hopkins $10 essay was to respond to the question "using whatever space and medium you like." Doesn't that mean we could just submit an art/video,,,etc...??

I know people who submitted a video for their $10 question and were admitted. The same has to be true for artwork - I submitted art along with my essay, but I'm sure that there are people who are capable of telling their $10 story using only a canvas (or paper or whatever). Look through the 9-page $10 essay thread for things people have done in the past two years. The whole point is to tell your story in an original and creative way - some people do this with an essay while others do it through other mediums

anyway, thanks for your ideas guys. i know that people submit art/videos, but i was just wondering if anybody had sent in just a canvas/print and gotten in instead of writing an essay to supplement the art. just for general knowledge...

you dont have to write the essay if you're going to send something.

on the online application [it should also say the same on the paper one] it says "Please check here if sending your response in question 1 in a medium other than an essay online. "

just to provide a bit of clarity to this back-and-forth about submitting the $10 essay in another medium...

Yes you may submit art work. Yes it does not have to come with any writing - though you might want to provide the adcoms a bit of context on how your piece responds to the essay prompt.

wannagetin -- you are wrong. The $10 essay for JHU is not a traditional essay prompt -- it is supposed to be answered in a unique, creative way. That is why the instructions are written the way they are -- any medium, no word limit. (((and really there is no reason to be rude on these boards!!!)))

On a side note, a know a number of the adcoms who have art in their offices that were sent by applicants in the past.

thanks for the input guys! i've already sent my print to hopkins.. we'll see what they think in april, lol... maybe i will put it on a free image hoster after the deadline so you guys can see, if you want.
