Submitting photographs with my application?

So I really enjoy taking pictures. Usually I just take really close macro pictures of random things that we see everyday. I'm thinking of taking a few of those pictures and submitting them as my supplements. Is that a good idea?

I know that many people submit photographs to be unique, but my photographs I think are very unique.

So should I submit them?

A lot of schools allow you to attach art supplements. If photography can be included as an art supplement, I think you should go for it, provided that photography is a significant interest of yours.

It is an interest, however I do not plan on pursuing a career in photography. Plus, my photographs are not “normal.” They are abstract, and I don’t know if the adcoms will like that.

If it’s an interest, go for it. The less normal the better, imo.

If you’re an accomplished photographer, and have published, won awards, etc. then in your application state that and provide the publication details (possibly with URL to the photos), and/or the (verifiable) award specifics. That’s then a very compelling EC – implicitly demonstrating deep involvement, and not subjective since professional have recognized your achievement.

Another situation that would be compelling is if you are taking AP Studio Art with photography as part of your portfolio. You should then stress that, and your transcript would show it. You may also be able to provide a URL to the photos in your proposed AP portfolio.

You don’t seem to be describing either situation. My sense is that submitting your photographs with your application would be odd, and be distracting. Perhaps someone would look at the photos and their impression/judgment is subjective – not what you want.

Yea, I was thinking that submitting photographs would be random. I mean, I like photography but my other EC’s are focused on science, teaching, and religion. So giving them photographs would scatter my ECs.

So I shouldn’t submit them?

I don’t think so.

Ok, I’m looking to major in Chemical Engineering. But I love photography. I won a local art contest and I received the Digital Arts award in my school last year. I took photography last year and I’m currently taking AP Studio Art and i plan on taking the AP exam. Would it be random if i submitted an arts supplement with a portfolio of my photography along with my application?
