Most colleges indicate one can submit either the SAT “OR” the ACT when applying. At the same time, they require that you “submit all test scores” from a testing agency. But it is not clear if that means ALL scores from BOTH testing agencies (if you take both SAT and ACT) or if you pick one of the systems and must submit all scores from that one testing agency.
If I took 2 SAT Reasoning tests and 2 ACT tests, am I required to submit all 4 scores? Or just both (2) from either ACT or SAT?
A college will only need one. Be aware of things like the writing portion on the ACT. Many schools require that. Personally, I’ve only taken the ACT since I live in the midwest. I may be mistaken, but I believe that colleges will receive all of your SAT scores and you can’t control that. As far as ACT, you can send them the scores you want them to see. I took the ACT a ridiculous number of times, and I sent 1 score report to all of my colleges. Also, be aware of which colleges superscore your SAT and/or ACT. Overall, I can only speak on behalf of the ACT, and I would recommend that you submit your best score only.
P.S. It costs $12 to send additional ACT score reports to colleges, and that can add up fast.
Most schools do NOT require you submit all tests, only many of the most competitive. What schools are you specifically talking about? @drusba is the expert on which schools require all tests and what that specifically means.
There are actually only a small number of schools that have a rule requiring you to submit all scores. And what that means for the ones that do have such a rule varies:
Georgetown requires all SAT, all SAT subject test, and all ACT scores.
Duke requires either all ACTs or, alternatively, all SAT and subject tests; if you submit any SAT or any subject test scores, you must submit both all SATs and all subject tests.
Cornell is somewhat ambiguous but appears to require all SATs or alternatively all ACTs, plus all subject test scores.
Stanford and Penn require both all SATs and all ACTs, but you can send whatever subject test scores you want to send.
Yale requires either all SATs or all ACTs (if you decide to send both you must send all of both), but you can send whatever subject test scores you want to send.
Carnegie Mellon and Harvey Mudd require either all SATs or all ACTs, plus all subject tests
Rice and Tufts require all SATs if you send any SATs but you can send the ACTs or subject tests you want to send.
UCs’ rule is ambiguous. They require all SATs if you send any SAT but it appears you can send whatever ACTs or subject tests you want to send.
Barnard’s rule is ambiguous. It says it “expects” applicants to submit all scores, but does that while mentioning submitting either SAT or ACT and saying nothing about subject tests. It then declares it follows the spirit of score choice. (Of note is that Barnard is connected to Columbia which dropped its anti-score choice rule more than two years ago.)
Syracuse requires all SAT scores if you send SAT but you can instead send ACT and choose which ACTs you want to send (it does not require or consider subject tests).
