Subscores don't add up right?

<p>I just checked my scores (ACT + writing for April), and while they're much better than I expected and I don't feel the need to search for extra points, I'm just wondering something:</p>

<p>On the English part I received 18's on both the subscores but a 35 for the English category. For reading I received a 17 and an 18, for a total of 34.</p>

<p>Is it just my lack of knowledge about the ACT/the fact that the essay is still ungraded, or is there something wrong with that?</p>

<p>Just read this at the bottom of the score page:
“Your Composite score is the average of your scores on the four subject area tests. Subscores do not necessarily add up to your score for a subject area test.”</p>

<p>Sorry for the stupid question :P</p>
