Subsidized Staffords for graduate school?

Hi,

Does anyone know if subsidized Staffords for grad school are EFC-dependent as with undergrad? And if so, what the EFC cut-off is?

Thanks!

Yes, for subsidized loans you must demonstrate need. There are no “cut-offs,” the formula to determine need is

Cost of attendance - EFC = Need

Graduate students are eligible for up to $20,500 per year in Stafford Loans. No more than $8,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans, so you must have at least $8,500 in need for that portion to be subsidized. If you only have $4,000 in “need,” only $4,000 would be subsidized.

If you do not show need, you can still borrow $20,500 per year (up to a total of $138,500) in unsubsidized Staffords. Grad PLUS loans (similar to Parent PLUS, but taken in the student’s name) are also available to graduate students.

Thanks. If I show need, but my need is also met by other means (fellowships, etc), would I still be eligible for the subsidized loans, or does the need have to be unmet need?

To qualify for Federally subsidized loans you must demonstrate need. If your need has been fully met, then you do not demonstrate need and are only eligible for UNsubsidized loans.

Congratulations on the fellowships!
