Does anyone have any experience with the sub-free dorm?

Also, is it hard to get housing at Pitt? Do some of you students/parents put down a deposit right away even if you might not be attending Pitt?

Thanks.

I think that “most” honors program students stay in the honors dorm. I didn’t realize that Pitt has substance free. Is this different than the honors dorm?

Yeah, I’ve kind of been wondering too about housing deposits. I would think that there is plenty of time though for deposits, based on the majority of applications coming later.

crazymomster,

On the collegeboard matchmaker site, Pitt is listed as having a sub-free dorm but I haven’t confirmed that.

On the Pitt housing site it does not list substance-free as one of the options. As for the deposit, I believe housing is allocated in June. As long as you pay your deposit by the deadline, you have an equal chance to get your choices.

As an incoming freshman, you are guaranteed 3 years of on-campus housing as long as you send in the housing deposit by the deadline. The deadline is dependent upon when you send in your enrollment fee (so the earlier you send it in, the earlier your housing deposit is due). Make sure you look for that housing deposit date on your paperwork – it is not the same date for everyone!!! And everyone gets the same shot of dorm choices no matter when the housing deposit is sent in.

to expand on what MTNest said, putting down a deposit early does not give you any preference in housing assignments. Therefore, if you are not sure you want to attend, there is not reason to accept your offer of admission early. Accepting your offer now, will only hasten the need to put down the housing deposit, and will not give you any priority in dorm selection.

All freshman dorms are substance-free. Alcohol is completely prohibited. In the upperclassman suites/apartments, alcohol is permitted in moderate amounts for those 21 and up. Honestly I haven’t seen much drinking going on in dorms, because most dorm residents are under 21. And most people will just go drink at a party rather than get caught drinking in Towers (since there are numerous consequences).

Thanks for the information, everyone. I appreciate it!
