Substance Free/East Wheelock

Hi all,

I've been browsing and searching on the forums, and I'm confused; are you only allowed to apply to substance free OR East Wheelock (as in, the two are mutually exclusive)? I'll be a freshman at Dartmouth in the fall, and would prefer a substance free dormitory (moreso to avoid drunken roommates), but would also like to apply to the EW cluster. If I really had to choose, I'd rather apply to EW, which brings me to my next question: how difficult is it to get in the EW cluster as a freshman (and subsequent years)?

Looking forward to meeting you all :D

YOu apply and it probably won’t be difficult at all. Once you are there EW will ask you if you plan on staying for the next year or if you are going to participate in room draw.

It’s not hard to get in, and there is a substance free dorm in the EW cluster.

is east weelock something worth doing? Do a lot of people apply for it? is it stigmatized or secluded from the rest of student body in any way?

Thanks for all of your responses!

collegefreak1: there is a stereotype (i’ve heard) that comes with EW.

still, does anyone know if you can apply to BOTH east wheelock and substance free housing? I think that should be okay, if there is a substance free housing in EW

On the application, I applied for both substance-free and EW in case I don
t get EW.
I read somewhere that EW has a special application, but I can
t seem to find that application for first year students. I only see the one for Upper Class students.

If anyone has the application, would you mind posting the link?

Thanks!

hellomoon, I went to the EW open house during Dimensions. It was pointed out there that the special application with essays has been eliminated this year for freshmen–all you have to do now is indicate your interest on the housing app.

I think all freshmen who apply to EW will probably get into EW. From what I’ve gathered, EW is not necessarily the antil-social dorm, though a stigma exists. Search the forums for other people’s opinions! Most of them say that your experience will depend on your floor; personally I chose not to apply to EW because I want a “normal” college experience (though I’m not the party type). Nothing says you can’t hang out with people from EW.

On a similar note, does anyone know which dorms are sub-free this year? I hear they rotate.

Usually a sub free floor is in the river, sometimes a whole building in the river will be sub free if there is enough demand.

oh~ so Mclaughlin and Russell Sage both don’t have sub free housing?

They could, but usually there isn’t that much demand for it that it goes outside EW and the river…i don’t think they had any sub free floors in either of those dorms my freshman year. If you check ORL’s website, you can see what floors were sub free for the past year…it’ll be a reasonable estimate of what will be sub free for the coming year. Honestly though, I didn’t live in sub free housing, and I’d say about 3/4 of my floor drank and 1/4 didn’t…and I knew people on sub free floors who certainly drank. There will be a mix wherever you end up.

I know for certain there was a subfree floor in Mclaughin this year. There is also usually one in the choates. It all really just depends on demand though.

This year in The Choates there was a sub free floor in Little.

Hi there!

Is it possible that I might have a lower chance of getting East Wheelock if I checked the Single Sex Living Area Box AND the Substance Free Housing on the Housing Application?

You should check this out before living in East Wheelock

That could have been funny–but it wasn’t.
