Substance free floors

I am planning on attending the University of Miami for the fall semester. I would like to know about living on the substance free floors. Are they quieter than the regular ones? Do the students still like to have fun (like go to parties but maybe not drink)?

I’m not from U of Miami, but I do live on a sub-free floor. First thing you should know is that sub-free floor does not necessarily equal sub-free person. Many are, but I think a lot of people do go to parties but would rather have the option of a relatively quiet night if they want one.

Noise levels depend more on your dorm than your floor. If there’s a party going on within 10 yards of your room, it doesn’t matter whether those 10 yards mean the next room over or the room directly under you; you’re still going to hear it.

In my experience, students on sub-free floors definitely still like to have fun. In fact, sub-free floors tend to have great floor life.

Another bonus: reduced odds of waking up and finding puke in the hall or bathroom.

At my last schools, while I didn’t live on the floor I knew people who did. Apparently not everyone was substance free. Many were placed there or chose it because it was nicer than some other dorms. Most seemed to have fun but in other ways than go to parties (games, walks, etc).

I imagine it varies greatly from school to school

At my school substance-free floors aren’t necessarily substance-free, but are on average a little bit quieter and normally have less people who drink a lot. Also, penalties for having substances are substantially greater, so people are bit more low-key about their drinking/partying. Especially since some people aren’t placed on the substance-free floor by choice (parents, random housing assignment) Many students living on a substance-free floor definitely still will go out and have fun though

Thanks for all the input everyone! I would like to be on a floor that is quieter during the weekdays so that I can concentrate more on my classes and make sure I get a good night’s rest. I don’t care what people to on the weekends as much. I still want to go out and have fun though (and yes, that includes parties!).

I don’t understand - and maybe this is because I am going to a public university - but aren’t all dorms for undergraduates supposed to be “substance free”? Or does substance not just mean illegal substances (or alcohol for under-aged students) but things like caffeine or adderall or whatever.

May be my dumbest post on CC, forgive me.

According to the signs on my floor, sub-free means no alcohol or tobacco products.

Obviously illegal substances aren’t allowed anywhere, but on regular floors you can have alcohol in your room as long as you’re of age (though it’s not like the RAs raid your room if you don’t give them a reason to). You can’t smoke in any of the dorms.

All undergrad dorms are supposed to be substance free, yes. But since RAs do not in fact conduct a weekly search of every corner of your dorm room for drugs, that doesn’t really mean very much. Substance-free floors work because the people there won’t go “oh man, it’s so cool how you stashed ecstasy in your sock drawer”.

lol @ banning caffeine

haha amarkov that’s pretty funny! Well, I already chose the substance free option.
