Substance Free Housing In UMich

I’m not a huge fan of partying at all, and I prefer to room with someone who doesn’t like to party. With that said, I don’t like getting drunk nor do I like it when my friends go out and get drunk. However, what I like to do is maybe occasionally go out with 2-3 friends to a nice bar-restaurant to chill and have a little drink, but not get drunk.
I also have 0 tolerance for smoking and drugs. It’s something I would never try and would prefer if my room doesn’t smell like smoke all the time.

Do I sound like someone who should apply for UMich’s substance-free dorms? Although I’m don’t like partying, I don’t want my college experience to be completely alcohol-free either.

@willowhearted Someone once told me that it’s great to have quiet or substance free housing because you always have a place to go to get away from the noise or the partying BUT if you want to ever party or drink you can go out and join. I personally think it would be a great option for you based on what you wrote.
Note: I don’t go to UMich so I don’t know first-hand what their accommodations are like.

You should apply to the smoking free dorms instead, but it does depend on your roommate. If they are heavily against alcohol (like me  ) , they might not want someone slightly drunk barging into the room or alcohol bottles in the vicinity. If your discrete, and really sparse on your consumption then you could consider applying for substance free.

“You should apply to the smoking free dorms instead” Huh?? The entire campus is smoke free.

@NICE8x put it perfectly. Choose substance free and you’ll never have to worry about smoke or alcohol in your room or around it. There are a billion places to go get drunk or high elsewhere, and you’ll always have your room to return to.

Plus, people who choose substance free are usually the more nerdy, play video games, keep to themselves, religious, etc. So you won’t have to worry about a bunch of loud drunks coming back every night, or puke in the public bathroom, etc.

If you are confident in your ability to make friends, there is no downside to substance free housing. If you aren’t good at making friends on your own, you might want to get a normal dorm so that you’ll naturally find people who like to go out and party.

Usually you are not supposed to come into sub free housing while drunk or high. So it really doesn’t work to sign up for sub free so you can go out someplace else to party, then come home drunk. If you plan to party, don’t sign up for sub free.
