Substance free housing: Pros/Cons

What are the pros and cons of substance free housing?

I am an incoming freshman and I don't plan on smoking and drinking while in college.

I plan to choose substance free housing but I've heard some people say that the ones who opt for substance free are "antisocial"?

Thoughts/opinions are appreciated!

PS- A quiet and clean living environment is at the top of my list.

Might depend on the college but I don’t think it really matters… I’ve stayed in a couple substance free dorms and you really wouldn’t even know it… people are still doing weed and drinking anyway. Weed and (if you’re a freshman) alcohol are both illegal anyway… so why do they even need to specify that? In any event most of the substantial consumption takes place at parties which are at off campus dorms and stuff.

I don’t think it’s about being antisocial as much as not s**ting where you eat.

What will really make a difference is your choice to or not to follow through with your plan to sacrifice something enjoyable to avoid the problems that might come with it.

Here’s a recent thread that has discussed this topic quite a bit. Lots of good information on there.

I think it’s hilarious that people who don’t drink or smoke are considered anti-social.

Anyway, your college gives you that option? Mine didn’t. The whole campus was a “dry campus,” it didn’t stop people from bringing alcohol onto campus, however.

I wouldn’t worry about other peoples attitudes with you wanting to live there. Who cares as long as you like it and think it would be good for you.

Same here, lol. And now it’s going tobacco-free. Though I encountered my fair share of drunk people going back to their dorms, I never saw a drop of alcohol on campus.

I find this hilarious too. A lot of people seem to think that the only thing there is for college students to do as far as social life is concerned, is to go out and get wasted. I don’t really party at all, but I have a pretty awesome social life. I get all kinds of culture in my night life by going out to theater performances, live music events, museum excursions and countless coffee shops. There is plenty of social life to be had outside of drinking to excess.

SUB FREE IS THE BEST!!! The sub-free dorm I’m in is much more social than the non-sub-free dorm I was in last semester. If you don’t drink and you live in a prominent drinking environment, you may get sick of the smell. The smell of booze just turns me off.
