Substance Free Housing

What is your guys' experiences with Substance Free Housing? Are there mandatory drug-free events/activities I need to attend, if I have a dorm there? Is there a no tolerance rule when it comes to booze? And if I don't like it, what are my odds of changing to some other dorm room? :O

And how are the people in the building? Are they really conservative about the alcohol and drugs?

BUMP (that beat up) ;)

No first-hand experience, but from what I hear it is a mix of people who don’t like substances and people who really like substances whose parents forced them to stay there.

From what I’ve heard, what the last poster said is pretty true. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to live there unless you are 100 percent sure you don’t like to drink alcohol, and you don’t like other people to drink it, either.

The ‘substance free’ dorm throws some people off because they assume that all the other dorms must be crazy booze-fests if there’s a need for the substance free hall but that’s definitely not true. But from what I’ve heard the substance free dorm has zero tolerance rules or something similar, and I don’t know how easy it is to switch out… Switching dorms in general can be kind of difficult. Drugs/alcohol also aren’t allowed in the regular dorms either, the punishment is just different. If you’re caught drinking in someone’s room or something you have to go in front of a peer review board and they just make you write an essay or attend a counseling/alcohol education session.

Yeah, you don’t really need to live in substance free housing if you dislike substances.

Contrary to popular belief, many college students don’t drink and even more don’t smoke. The majority of students who DO drink or smoke don’t do so very often.

If you don’t like to drink or smoke, you’ll have no trouble meeting other like-minded individuals. If you’re worried about living in an environment with other people who do like to drink or smoke, I can assure you it shouldn’t be a problem - and if it IS a problem or if it IS negatively affecting you, you can definitely bring these issues up with an RA (because as a previous poster mentioned, drinking and smoking are not allowed in ANY of the dorms).

Transferring dorms can be difficult (or impossible) if your reasons are simply personal preferences (i.e. if you were assigned a triple but would rather live in a double). But if you have a legitimate reason and are clearly uncomfortable with your living situation, Res Hall will pretty much immediately give you a new room assignment, a new key, and a new contract the next day (speaking from personal experience).

College can be a - well - enlightening experience, to say the least. You may have your fair share of annoying experiences dealing with rowdy students in your dorm. But again, if you’re ever uncomfortable, talk to your RA, or even better, your RD or Res Hall.

All that being said, you don’t need to live in a substance-free dorm in order to find a fun, non-alcohol-related social atmosphere. I promise!

And just my two cents, you don’t need to get plastered with alcohol in order to have fun with alcohol. ;)

Well do you guys know if I can still adjust my housing preferences after the deadline for the housing app? I put it as one of my first choices since I heard about weed smoking roommates (BLEH), but now that you guys say all the residence halls have a policy on drugs and alcohol, I dont think Sub Free is the right fit for me… if its THAT intense. :/

It’s not that it’s “intense,” it’s just that you don’t really need it.

You could shoot out an e-mail to Res Hall. They might be able to accommodate you.
