Substance-Free Housing

Hi, I’ll be a freshman this fall and I was wondering if anyone knew what the situation surrounding substance-free housing looks like. I don’t drink/do drugs and don’t want to be pressured into either. I’m slightly afraid of being ostracized if the others on my floor don’t feel the same way (if I were to choose regular housing). However, is there a stigma surrounding the people that choose substance-free housing? Are they all kind of…boring?

I have the same question, can anyone speak to this?

Usually substance free housing is the best situation for people who know for sure they are not into drinking or drugs because of the community it creates. They’re not boring they just find other ways to have fun. On the other hand there seems to be more of a stigma for people who enjoy the drinking and partying lifestyle but are stuck in substance free housing (if their parents made them) than the people who chose to be in the housing themselves. You won’t necessarily be ostracized by people on your floor in a regular dorm (unless they are only into drinking/drugs which is a rare find) because you can go out and not drink but being in a substance free housing tends to be more fitting since the students that live there hang out a lot and do other stuff together when most people would be pregaming. Basically, don’t worry about any type of stigma if you know that is where you’ll be more comfortable because, chances are, you’ll find people with more common interests. Sorry for the generalizations but other students can chime in and you can make a choice.
