Substantial change in FAFSA?

So, after devastating news that college was not going to be affordable, my mom got her tax return back and her earnings went down by about 20,000. Will this be enough to significantly change my efc? Also, I just resubmitted Fafsa, but no email to let my schools know that it had changed. Is that okay? Will they send me a re-done estimate of my financial aid? THANKS SO MUCH!

Depends if it went down from 250,000 to 230,000 (then the answer is no) or maybe 50k to 30k… (possibly)

Sorry, I guess it’s important to say how much she made. It went down from 70,000 to around 50,000.

It might make a difference. You could be eligible for a partial Pell grant. If so, the school, will award this to you.

If it does make a change it would be minor. Like only a couple hundred to not more than $1000 would be my guess. So if you are needing to make up a big shortfall this won’t do it. Its also very borderline- its possible it won’t change anything.

If you’re applying to Texas schools as an instate student, perhaps the drop in income qualifies you for some state aid??

Okay, so I’m guessing that your mom had her taxes prepared by someone else, and you now have the correct numbers to enter onto your Fafsa. As long as you have sent a corrected Fafsa to your school, they should have everything they need to update your awards. If your Mom has several dependents, then you might get a partial Pell Grant award, even at $50,000 in income. If you are an only child, then you probably won’t be Pell eligible. There are several income and other household-size factors that are considered.

I recall from your earlier thread that your mom had/has significant medical expenses. I would encourage you to explore the possibility of professional judgement (basically an appeal to lower your EFC by the FA office at each individual school) if she had to declare income that last year that isn’t going to continue or will be unable to replace. You can find out more about this process by searching this board and finaid.org. Good luck!
