Success of Graduates in NY

Hi there - D is thrilled to have an acceptance to UofArts for MT. I know the kids graduate with good connections to the Philadelphia theatre scene - but I’m wondering about graduates making the transition to New York. Is the degree looked at highly by NY agents and casting people? Do they have alumni who have been successful in NY getting lead or supporting roles? I know it’s a wonderful, nuturing place, we are down to know really looking at how well prepared the students are at the end of the ride!

D’s NY agent wasn’t crazy about UArts when I went down the list of MT programs she applied to. She really only reacted well to UMich, CCM but I believe that any program is also what you make it and what you hae going in. D got into UArts w/$ and she hasn’t ruled it out. Just saw Sister Act and a cast member was UArts grad, fabulous. And I’ve seen plenty of amazing Bwy performers from so-called 2nd and 3rd tier schools, so…who is to say? Getting casted is more of a combo of luck, talent and right place, right time. After living this world for 4 yrs, that is what we have found. Degree from the top schools is great, but not really necessary. What it ultimately boils down to is that you’d better bring the goods in that audition room when you start going out.

As a counterpoint, a couple of yeas ago I was at a party and ended up chatting with a very active producer/casting director from NYC who thought well of UArts. In the final anaylysis though, I agree with MTmomNYC’s comments in the rest of her post. For what it’s worth, there are UArts grads who have “made it” in NYC, on tours, regionally, on TV and those who are pounding the streets trying to land a gig; the same can be said for virtually any school and program. What counts more than the name of the school is that innate talent you bring, what you invest in the training and educational process and what you then bring to the auditions. Add in, of course, timing, luck, look and type.

Thank you both for weighing in! MTmomNYC - did your agent say anything about Ithaca?
