Has anyone here successfully transferred to a UC for a major that they didn’t complete all the required coursework for? How rarely does that happen?
Probably common for majors with prerequisites that are not widely available in community colleges, such as UCI CS.
But it is best to complete what is available to you.
As the above commenter said, UCI’s ICS department requires ICS 31 through 33 for transfers but they will accept other CS courses as meeting that requirement.
What about failing to take a class that is widely available in community colleges, such as a calculus class? Could someone that failed to take that class still be accepted?
If the courses are listed as “required”, then probably not. If they are listed otherwise, then possibly.
For example, for UCI CS:
The “required” courses include two quarters of single variable calculus and three CS courses. There are eleven additional courses listed that would presumably be helpful (and would reduce the amount of “catch up” after transfer) but not “required”.
For calc, you have to finish the equivalent of Math2A and 2B
For ICS31-33, you can take other CS courses to satisfy. Many of my friends took Java/c++ despite python being offered at my CC.
Thank you for your replies. I guess I’ll have to take another year of community college to complete calculus.
Which CC are you at and which UC do you want to transfer to w/ what major?
I’m at Los Angeles Valley College and my goal is to transfer to UC Irvine for computer science.
Yeah you need Math 265 + 266.
The above lists LAVC MATH 265, 266, and CO SCI 836, 840, 890 in the “required” section. MATH 270 is the only course listed under “additional approved courses”, since LAVC does not have equivalents for the other UCI courses listed there. The UCI courses that have no LAVC equivalent total 37-39 quarter units, so expect to need about two and a half quarters of “catch up” courses after transfer to UCI.
