Successful transfers?

Carleton seems to take around 10% / 210 or so transfer applicants per year. Has anyone here been accepted to Carleton through the transfer admissions program? Any advice?

I'm very serious about finishing my degree at Carleton, and I've already visited Northfield and had an interview there. But 10% is still a really low acceptance rate. How can I make my application stand out?

My D was accepted as a sophomore transfer. Hard to say what helped. She was initially accepted as a freshman, but chose to go elsewhere. So we weren’t at all sanguine about Carleton’s willingness to accept her as a transfer. She did reasonably well at her first school, so I’m sure that helped - they knew she could manage the academics. They did not want to interview her again - she asked. Wrote a reasonably good essay and asked faculty that barely knew her at her first school for recommendations. She also resubmitted her HS recs (applying as a transfer is just like applying from scratch, so everything had to be submitted again). So far, so good. She likes Carleton much better than her previous college. I will say that Carleton appears to handle transferred students quite well. They have a pretty good process for bringing them in and integrating them into the school.

It is doable, but I agree that the percentages are tough. Best of luck.

Also keep in mind that Carleton is on the trimester system. If you are coming from a semester system school, credit for your current classes will not necessarily transfer on a one to one basis - that is Carleton will not necessarily give you full equivalent Carleton credits for a class that you took under the semester system. My D happily had a ton of AP credits so she did transfer as a full sophomore. If she hadn’t had those credits, she would still have been considered a third term freshman despite having taken a full load at her former college. If that is a concern, you may want to ask early for a credit analysis to see where you stand if you transfer.

What are your grades, ACT/SAT scores, EC’s, etc?
