Successful UF Appeals?

I am currently in the process of appealing my decision to UF for the Fall 2018 semester! I know I’m not alone in this as many people have been rejected, I am very aware of just how competitive this school is to get into. I have been granted an appeal packet (which is totally digital this year?) on account of some personal circumstances. I’m a top student and HIGHLY involved in my community and extracurriculars. I think I have as good a shot as any, I know the numbers aren’t in my favor, but it would kill me to at least not try and appeal. My struggle comes from knowing how much information to share in my appeal letter. I don’t want to present a sob story, but my situation caused significant struggles for me through high school. I didn’t present this in my original application because I was worried about sounding like I was asking for pity. I believe I have “new and compelling” evidence that UF wants for an appeal, I just am working out how to present it.

What I wanted to know is if anyone has previously successfully appealed, and if so, what kind of case did you present to UF? I know this can be a very personal subject, I’m willing to talk in private, or if you can give even a vague idea of what was presented to UF to be accepted, that would be appreciated. And if your appeal was denied, I have the same question of what case you presented/the basis of your appeal. If anyone has any advice or tips on crafting a successful appeal, it is appreciated. Thank you all so much in advanced!

(Also please refrain from simply telling me to move on from UF or anything for the like! It’s not helpful. I have a backup plan of attending SF and transferring in if I am denied again as I’d like to stay in Gainesville.)

I’m also in the process of appealing my decision to UF. I already sent in my appeal. Basically, what I talked about in my letter was kind of personal and I included things I left out of my original application because I thought they would’ve worked against me. I just made sure that I didn’t sound like I was “begging” to be admitted. I hope to receive my decision soon because I need to solidify my backup plans if it doesn’t work.

My son was accepted to the UF PaCE program only, fall semester. This would be his first choice if regular enrollment. Also accepted to FSU, Clemson, Maryland (spring 2019) and Case Western. He originally applied as undeclared but has since interned at a doctor’s office and would like to pursue something pre-med- either biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering (my recommendation). Unfortunately, the PaCE program does not offer any of these majors, but he did send an appeal letter to transfer to the regular fall semester along with the $200 admission fee. Is there anything I can do as a parent on my end? Can he appeal to transfer to regular enrollment (and one of his preferred majors) after the minimum 2 semesters & 15 online credits? What are the realistic chances of getting this type of term transfer, now or later? Can he attend FSU and also take UF PaCE online classes at the same time? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

@silvil We are in the same boat. My daughter was accepted to PaCE. Originally applied as an advertising major, but after working at an elementary school this year, decided to change to Communications Processes and Disorders (Speech Pathology), which is not a PaCE major. She applied for a term change request from PaCE to Summer or Fall. We were told she was not eligible for a regular appeal because she was not denied admission to UF. They said we will not likely get a decision until late April. Also, when you sent in the admission fee, did you sign the PaCE contract? I think that is required.

As far as transferring to regular enrollment, he can apply for a non-PaCe major after his 60 credits, but he will be treated as a transfer student, and will be given no priority as a current UF student. Additionally, if your son wants to pursue medical, most medical schools will not accept coursework in the core science classes which were completed online, so he would have to take those classes elsewhere.

For those reasons, my daughter is likely headed to FSU (where she received the Freshman scholarship), even though I am a UF alum, and she was raised a Gator. She’s worked too hard and is too good of a student to be put into this box at UF.

@rccoble I went ahead & talked to an admissions officer at UF. They do have my son’s request & signed contract. However, she said they don’t have any openings for term changes to summer or fall at this time at all. They may decide to grant a few by May 1st but the chances are honestly very slim. I’m so disappointed! He was so set on attending UF, but even if he completes his 60 online credits in some unrelated major, they may not let him transfer to a pre-health major, even with transfer credits.

So he will also very likely be attending FSU, or Clemson. Good luck!

They told us basically the same. I didn’t send in the contract, as you can’t commit to two schools simultaneously and she will probably be committing to FSU this week so that we can register for Orientation. I did hear that several PaCe students were granted traditional admission last year, so I think it can happen, but by that time, who knows?

I’m wishing the best of luck to everyone no matter their school of choice or the path that they take, but my question is specifically about students who got denied admission and are appealing that decision

To @clahde I’m sending you good vibes and praying for your appeal to go through! It sounds like we have similar circumstances too. Fingers crossed decisions are sent for you soon!

My son sent in his appeal on March 8th and is still waiting to hear. Has anyone heard either way on their appeal decision?

My daughter submitted March 6th and still waiting as of April 4th, for those searching appeals in future years.
