Why are some people good at accounting while others are not?

I admit, I'm not the best student and I'm in general 3.0 or 2.5 classes. (Only reason I got 2.5 in economics, statistics, and math was because I got 40% on my final exam when I had a borderline 3.5). But for some reason I barely can pass with a 2.0 (borderline 1.5) in my financial (past) and managerial (currently taking) class.

Although I'm not exceptional in economics, statistics, and math at least I have some understanding. With accounting, I feel I understand it by doing practice problems and tests, but actually have almost no understanding with accounting.

I heard that accounting is like learning a new language and requires completely different approach to studying compared to most classes.

But why do some people suck at accounting, but understand math? And why do people understand accounting, but suck at math? Help!

Accounting and math don’t have much in common. Just because you are good at math doesn’t mean you will be good at accounting. I know math and engineering majors who were in my accounting classes, they struggled with the material.

Accounting is more about learning rules and being apply to apply them properly. The only hard part is volume of material you have to learn. People just aren’t use to putting in the time to learn all of the material.

You probably have a somewhat understanding of economics, statistics, and math because those are all subjects taught in high school. Even if you didn’t take them in high school, they are all math-related classes. It is still easier to understand because you have been taking math since the 1st grade.

Accounting is a completely different subject. Coming out of high school, you won’t know a thing about accounting unless you had an accounting job.

You have to learn the material from scratch. Sure, knowing a bit of algebra will help you with the math but it will not help you understand the material. You just have to put in the work to learn it.

My professors have all said that most people who are good in math are awful at accounting.

Those who do well in accounting often struggle with math.

The subejcts require different ways of thinking that are sometimes quite opposite.

Math is logical when you really look at it, everything sort of makes sense sequentially.

Accounting is sometimes counter-intuitive. You have to do things a certain way which don’t always make sense. It can be very confusing.

“But why do some people suck at accounting, but understand math? And why do people understand accounting, but suck at math? Help”

The subject is completely different. The only overlap is the use of numbers and basic algebra.

Honestly, I think that for most people accounting (difficulty of material wise) is much easier to grasp and learn than college level math courses. It is usually the amount of material covered that trips accounting students up. Contrastly, math contains alot of very difficult to grasp/understand concepts/material but may not cover as much material.

We all think differntly though.
