I’m looking for input on Suffolk University in Boston. From what I can tell, it is much easier to get into than Boston College Boston University or Northeastern. Specifically, how does it stack up compared to these schools? Thanks!
Suffolk University has been the least desired of Boston area colleges for over 50 years. High acceptance rate, low retention and graduation rates.
Go to UMass Boston instead.
Good to know. Thanks so much.
While I agree suffolk is not a desired school, I think it would give you a much better college experience than UMass Boston. Having been to both campuses, UMass Boston is downright depressing and is actually quite far from downtown Boston. At least Suffolk is right in the heart of Boston. If you are set on going to school in Boston but can’t get into BU, BC or Northeastern, I personally think Suffolk is a slightly better choice
What are your stats?
Are you a oy or a girl?
There are better schools in the Boston area for B students (or better safeties for A students).
For instance, Lesley and Simmons would be better than Suffolk and offer a better experience than UMass Boston, in my opinion.
^Agreed. Also look at Emmanuel which is next door to Simmons but is co-ed.
Given that Northeastern, BU and BC have become significantly more competitive in the past 20 years I am surprised that these other schools in the Boston area have not been able to benefit from this. Simmons has fallen short of its enrolment goal the past few years despite being a good alternative to the “big 3”, at least for women.
UMass Boston remains isolated on Columbia Point despite dramatic changes in the past 20 years. They are finally building dorms which will help.
It all depends on what you want your college to do for you. Suffolk isn’t going to put you on the fast track to Wall Street or the State Department, but going there and doing well will get you into very adequate grad schools or jobs that require a bachelor’s but don’t really care where it is from ( which is the vast majority of white-collar jobs in the country…retail managers, school teachers, factory foremen, human resources, etc.).
I disagree @moooop. Suffolk is a mess. They have had 5 presidents in the past 5 years. The level of education there is mediocre at best. That much has not changed in 40 years.
Look at BU’s College of General Studies program. Friend of my D’s applied to BU’s College of Arts and Sciences and was not admitted to that program, but was offered a place in the College of General Studies, which is a two year program… After two years, you can apply to any of the BU undergraduate programs. There’s also an option of going to London during those first two years. Apparently, a fair number of high school students enter BU this way. I’m not sure but you may be able to apply to the CGS program directly.
I agree with Tom Sr. about UMass Boston–it’s isolated.
Tom, what are you disagreeing with?
@mooop I disagree with your statement that Suffolk provides a good education.
In which post did I say that?
@moooop post #7
I base my disdain for Suffolk on having interviewed many applicants from Suffolk for my accounting firm over the years and not having hired any.
Still waiting for something I said that is wrong…where did I say they churn out top-notch accountants?
