I’m interested in becoming a counselor or social worker, and I’ve re-narrowed my top two schools down to Suffolk University and Emmanuel College. I was just wondering if anyone had any input on Suffolk and Emmanuel’s overall reputation/academic quality, and the quality of their psychology and sociology programs.
bump
Suffolk.
The deadline to decide is May 1, so I’d really appreciate some answers!
What’s their respective net cost*?
Did you get admitted anywhere else?
Did you get into the honors program at either one?

It won’t make a dramatic difference if they both have your major and they are solid schools.
The one big advantage you have in New England post grad is the Suffolk brand via the law school. It’s is widely respected and produced many successful grads. I’m not saying this because you are going into the law. It just is more recognizable in the business world. If you want to be a therapist or a social worker or professor it won’t make a difference at all. And if you plan on leaving NE it won’t matter much either. Both good. But I do like Suffolk’s location near the golden dome of the state house and back bay. It’s vibrant.
You’re talking undergrad, right? I recommend Simmons for grad school if you’re going for an LICSW (but I’m thinking that’s not what you were asking ).
Personally I think Emmanuel’s location and affiliation with Colleges of the Fenway offers more of a “leafy” (albeit urban) campus compared to Suffolk’s location next to the State House and financial district. I’d say cost is a very important consideration given that your ultimate career decision will require grad school.
Agreed. Good points.
Thanks so much for the responses, guys!
Suffolk would cost about $36K a year, and I got into the honors program. They also have a 3-year sociology degree program, but I’d have to go for summer sessions twice.
Emmanuel would cost about $35K a year, and I did not get into the honors program.
What do you think? What do your instincts say?
Well, I liked Suffolk a little more, but it just seems like Emmanuel is a little better and more selective. I really liked them both though, probably mostly because they’re in Boston.
@privatebanker the post above was a reply to you
Both great in a lot of ways. Emmanuel would be excellent. Probably more social scene and more intellectually focused towards grad school too.
UPDATE:
I revisited both schools and kind of decided on Suffolk, but my parents decided I can’t go there anymore because they don’t personally like how it’s largely a commuter school and that the campus is spread out. So, it’s off to Emmanuel for me (woot woot). It’s okay tho
