Does anyone know what social life is like at Suffolk University?

Since 80% of the campus is made up of commuter students, it can be a bit distant. This is especially true of upperclassmen. Being in the dorms freshman and sophomore year will help, but after that everyone is out on their own to find an apartment or commute from home. I commute from the suburbs, and I have a friend who has an apartment in Alston who actually has a longer commute than I do (it's more than an hour and a half for him, each way).

Clubs are the key to social life. Get involved and make friends from the start, even if you're in the dorms as a freshman. Those ties will last longer than the ones with fellow residents.

The school is very unique, and it's not for everyone. Personally, I'm transferring out because it hasn't worked out for me. However, that should not discourage you, since everyone is different and you may have an entirely different perspective. Just make sure to do as much research as you can before you commit: hang out in the lounges, talk to commuters, etc.

Thank you for your help ace.

Suffolk isn't where I wanted to go but I might have to at least for a year. I plan on transferring, but I still want a good social life for the year. I would be living on campus..not sure which building though. If I lived on campus do you think the social scene would be good? I'm not sure if students socialize in their dorms or if they go out in various parts of the city.

I chose not to live in the dorms (which, in retrospect, I regret), but I know that most people tend to go elsewhere to socialize. 150 Tremont is a bit more lively than 10 Somerset... but Somerset is much nicer. They just acquired a new dorm at 10 West Street, and that should be open for next fall, but I don't think it will be available to freshmen. It was a failed condo development, so they're going to convert them into apartment-style suites. General policy around colleges is that only sophomores and up are allowed to have apartment-style suites.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Yeah, that makes sense. Somerset is a lot nicer and in a better location, but the social life is probably better on Tremont. It's a hard decision...I'm constantly changing my mind. Thanks for your input though!

My son stayed at 10 Sommerset during his Freshman year and made lots of friends. He is just finishing up his second year there and still has those friends come by his apartment this year. He said everyone leaves there doors open, he said they never locked their doors in the dorm unless they were going away for the weekend. There is always someone to talk to and they go out in groups. He says you will make friends from different floors and dorms there too.
Don't worry, you'll have friends!

Thank you WWMom! That does make me feel better. I'm just concerned that Suffolk isn't the typical campus-style school.
