Suffolk University

We're planning a trip to Boston to look at colleges and I'm wondering if anyone knows about Suffolk University. D's major is undecided at this point, but she is considering communications. If you have any info on academics, social life, dorms, etc., please post.

Thanks!

Not a very competitive school. Very easy to get into i believe they accept around 70-75% of their students. If your D is a B/C student with 1000/1600 you should be accepted no problem. Its a commuter school and competes with Umass boston for students. Its in the middle of Boston so social life should be good.

If D has around B+/A- or better, consider Emerson College, a much better school for communications right next to Suffolk. Also look at BU which also has a very good communications program.

I agree with the posters above, Suffolk is an ok school. Also look at Northeastern, my current school. Communications is a strong major here with plethora of internships available. I do agree, BU has a distinguied communications school. Another school of interest might be Tufts.

Hi All –

Thanks for the info. D was thinking of Suffolk as a safety school. She also wantes to see Northeastern, Emerson, Boston University as fit schools, and Boston College as a reach. Based on the info below, please let me know if you have any other suggestions for colleges/universities to visit in the Boston area.

Currently she’s an OOS junior enrolled in an advanced level communications program in her public HS

The communications program consists of a concentraction of 4 years of interdisciplinary AP level and honors courses in English, history, and mass media.

In addition she takes on level math (4 years by end of senior year)and honors/AP science courses (also 4 years), and took 3.5 years of Spanish

She is a rising senior in a highly diverse high school, so she wants to attend a college that offers a bit of racial/geographic/people diversity.

SAT scores are 1340/1870

GPA somewhere between 3.5-3.6

Activities
Hundreds of service hours (mostly animal welfare, local library, and working with kids) including two videos that she is shooting for the local humane society this summer
NHS
Girl Scouts, including president of troop and Gold and Silver Awards
Recreational level soccer
Yearbook
Literary magazine
