Suggest me a safety CompSci/Business college with big merit aid

So I'm trying to add in just one more safety to my list of colleges and I can't decide, or to be honest find one with the merit aid part other than probably Stonybrook but I really don't want to go to a college like 20min away from home... (So even if i apply and get in I feel like I just won't go) So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest me such a safety college for studying both computer science and business preferably in the northeast?

SAT: 2220 (760M, 700CR, 760W) GPA 101.19W (top 5%) good SATIIs/APs.

I already have Northeastern/Binghamton on my list.

Also was thinking of Villanova but not sure... (Someone give me thoughts on this since I heard they give out big aids to CS majors)

I guess if I can't find one more I'll just add Stony Brook.

How much aid do you need? How much do you want to spend each year?

How do you define “big aid” from Nova?

The CS award is “up to $8k per year”…and need is considered.

Villanova Computing Scholars (ViCS)
Sponsor: National Science Foundation
Eligibility: Applicants must be admitted to the Computer Science major with demonstrated financial need.
Award: Up to $8,000 per year

Do you qualify for financial aid? How much will your parents pay each year?

Well a financial safety so like somewhat below $10,000 perhaps? (Obviously full ride would be nice) And I don’t know much about aid at Nova just that I remember reading somewhere because their CS department is so small, they give preference and more aid to CS majors.

*Well a financial safety so like somewhat below $10,000 perhaps? (Obviously full ride would be nice) *

So, you’re saying that at your financial safety, you want to spend about $10k or less? That won’t happen at Villanova. That would mean getting a $40k per year merit…not happening.

Just because a school awards merit for a dept, doesn’t mean that the awards are huge. Depts usually don’t have THAT much money to throw around.

For a school to be a safety for you, you can’t be guessing as to how much you’ll get. A guess isn’t a safety. You have to KNOW FOR SURE that a school is affordable for it to be a safety so you’d have to know FOR SURE how much you’d get.

With your stats, Alabama would give you free tuition plus 2500 per year (for CS). That could be a safety for you, but remaining costs will be about $13k per year. Bama has a brand new Science and Engineering Complex. The campus is beautiful and many NY students go there. The frosh classes have been greater than 50% OOS for the last 3 years.

Here’s a list of national universities said to offer full-ride scholarships (shown in USNWR rank order):

@mom2collegekida eh sorry I should have made myself clear, I’m looking for both financial aid and merit aid. Family income is 100000 before taxes with both parents working and well have 2 people in college next year.

Have your parents run the NPC at Villanova and see what you’d get. Keep in mind that a merit award is going to get applied to NEED. So, if you were to get a grant from Nova, and then the CS dept awarded an $8k merit, the school may reduce its grant by the same amount.

Anyway…Nova’s awards aren’t assured so you can’t count on that being a safety.

Ask your parents how much they’ll pay for each twin to go to college. With two going at the same time with an income of $100k, they may only be able to pay out $10k (or less) per child unless they have college savings.

Bama would be a safety for you. You could take out a $5500 student loan, and your parents would only have to pay about $7k per year (or less if you choose a standard double dorm).

Villanova comes out to be like 16 grand and my mom says 10000 will be okay so I’ll look into Bama. How about University of Maryland College Park (OOS)?

Total UMCP OOS cost per year is ~$38K. According to Kiplinger’s, the cost for an OOS student after average need based aid is $30,878. If your family income is $100K, I would not expect you to get above average need-based aid. But run the NPC to be sure.

Yea guess UMCP won’t be good for this. I might decide on University of Rochester, I was told by my counselor that it should be a safety both admission-wise and financially for me. Do you guys agree?

University of Rochester is strong for CS, from what I’ve been told, and they could potentially give you some good aid. Good option - I’m applying there as well, and it should be a safety admissions wise for you.
