i've heard that the parents on here give great advice so I'm looking for some safeties suggestions as well as any other schools that could be a good fit for me!

I have a 3.7 UW gpa with AP and honors courses, a 32 ACT, and my school does not rank. I have solid ecs with some leadership and a lot of passion. my biggest thing is newspaper and I am seriously considering communications or journalism with a double major in business.

right now my list includes Barnard, Fordham, Michigan State, UMich (instate), Boston U, and Northwestern. I'm drawn to medium or large schools but I would consider a small school in/near an urban area (such as Barnard, although I am aware that they don't have a comm major.) I'm a city girl and a school near Boston, NYC, or Chicago would be ideal for me. I am also interested in schools that would give me merit aid, am looking for schools in the Midwest or northeast, and an excellent thing for me would be a good school paper.

I’m tempted to say you’ve already got a few safeties on there with your stats. That’s probably a slight exaggeration, but I would think your chances at BU and Fordham, for instance, are pretty good.

Have you considered Lake Forest just north of Chicago? It might be too small to suit you, but it would certainly be a safety. They have communications and business majors. A friend’s daughter went there and had a very good experience.

The University of Kansas fits your criteria…Midwest, large school, 45 mins from KC, great communications and journalism, award winning student newspaper and the potential for merit aid.

A school you may not have heard of is Northeastern University in Boston. It’s a very good school (currently ranked #62 on USNEWS and World Report list), in the heart of Boston and they give very generous merit aid to qualified students. I would recommend at least taking a look at it. My son is currently a student there on a full-tuition scholarship and we had not even heard of it until someone here suggested it to us!

I would second Loyola University in Chicago. We visited last year. Great location in the city and on the Lake. No joke about the windy city though.

Since safeties often don’t give much aid and some don’t give much merit, we need to know how much your family will pay.

If your family will pay $55k+ for any school, then awesome. If not, then there’s no point recommending schools that won’t be affordable. A safety has to be affordable.!!

Pugmad…is that the NMF scholarship for full tuition? I know that BU is great with merit for NMFs, but seems rather spotty with merit for others.

Theforest…are you a likely NMSF? What was your PSAT?

Ohio State would give you merit money with your stats. I don’t know about the journalism dept. The business school is very good. Columbus is a great city and easy to get to on Southwest.

This statement makes no sense. “Safeties” can’t be defined by who does and doesn’t give FA and merit aid. They can only be defined in terms of an individual student’s stats. A safety is a school where the student is at least in the top 25% of the applicant pool (and a school that accepts at least 35 - 40% or more of their applicants).

In fact if a school is truly a safety for a particular student, they are MORE likely to offer that student merit aid, because that student is by definition one of their most qualified applicants.

You would get very good merit aid at Ohio University with that 32 (a merit scholarship cut point there), and Scripps is absolutely amazing for communications/journalism.

In a small city.

And I agree that if you are looking for a big city safety school for a top student like yourself, DePaul is great. Check it out.

Erin’s Dad, you’re right. I stand corrected. In addition to being a “safe” admit stats-wise, a true safety is affordable.

Still, the phrase that “safeties don’t give much aid and don’t give much merit” makes zero sense. Safeties are MORE likely to give merit aid.

Another mid-sized school that has a well-recognized communications program and is on the safe-side for the OP would be Elon. But it’s not in/near a major city, and it’s not in the northeast or Chicago.

“Since safeties often don’t give much aid and some don’t give much merit, we need to know how much your family will pay.”

My parents will be able to pay up to 25-30 thousand a year, so the two state schools I mentioned (MSU & UMich) would be completely affordable. I’m definitely willing to consider privates, especially if they have a reputation for generous merit aid, so by all means suggest them!

Thanks for all of the responses so far-- I like Loyola, Northeastern, Syracruse, and DePaul. I actually love Emerson and I have a friend who got a huge scholarship from them but I am considering a double major and it’s pretty much just an arts/communications school.

mom2collegekids- I wasn’t able to take the PSAT so no.
