i am just stuck in college choice process
but i think i will have time to change my choices
i was thinking about amherst williams and darthmouth
plz help me out !!!

Are you female, and if so are you interested in women’s colleges?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/151609-international-student-aid.html

I am male, asian.

also forgot to mention I am an international student

i take it you’re from kyrgyzstan?

OMAGAD, you know kyrgyzstan :))
yup I am

If you like amherst, williams, and dartmouth u might like:

middlebury
bowdoin
bates
colby
colgate
hamilton
Kenyon
Brown
Yale
…

well then, you won’t be considered like any other asian applicant…

it looks impressive to come from a country half the campus can’t pronounce, not to mention you look like an impressive applicant

You seem to be looking for small schools and have a strong background (continued interest?) in chemistry.

You’ll find very strong chemistry programs in the midwest at Carleton and Grinnell.
If willing to consider the west coast I’d add Pomona.
In the south, Rice.
In the northeast, of your choices, Amherst will offer less depth in the physical sciences than Williams and Dartmouth.

thank you very much, that’s greatly appreciated

Of all the LACs named, Grinnell offers the best financial aid for internationals (12% of the student body is international and most have generous FA) and it has an outstanding chemistry dept. (S is a chem major there and loves it). It’s located in the rural midwest though, so you have to be okay with that.

but grinnel’s average finaid for internationals is much lower than colby’s or colgate’s

bump it is really important

Averages are deceiving on the financial aid scene. You want the distribution-how many full rides, or close to full rides does the school offer? Find out what the typical package for a low income international looks like because even if it’s not a full ride, the components-loan, grant and work-study-could be quite different depending on the school. Finally, be aware that most LACs will negotiate. For example, if you get admitted to two LACs, but you got a more generous package at one school, the other school is often willing to improve the offer if it ensures that you will accept. Contact the financial aid dept at each school to get more specific information.

that’s very informative, thank you

Good point M’smom and Colgate costs roughly 52k vs 45k at Grinnell. That right there is a 7k difference(ouch!!!)

Do you think my stats are good enough for the ivies?

Your stats are good enough-but that’s not usually the issue for any applicant. Most applicants have ‘good enough’ stats. It’s about whether you bring anything to the mix that they are looking for, whether you have exceptional talents, whether the people who write recommendations for you think you are not just outstanding, but unique. It doesn’t hurt to submit an application or two to a few top schools but know that it’s always a long shot.

How much aid do you need? How much can your family contribute?

If you’ll be needing a lot of aid, then you need to concentrate on the few colleges that can meet the need of int’ls.

Will your family co-sign any loans?
