Do look into SUNY ESF. It’s literally across the street from Syracuse and offers the sort of environment you seem to be looking for, but at a much lower cost than the private school adjacent to it. Syracuse has outstanding programs in public policy and some subfields of environmental work that ESF lacks. If for whatever reason you decide to switch out of environmental engineering, you can simply apply to Syracuse for transfer and would not have to upend your social life.
