Suggested Reading for Parents of New College Kids?

Our only S left last week for freshman year at college. H and I continue adjusting to this phase in our lives. (I also have a health issue I'm dealing with). I get on-and-off anxiety about S being away.

Today I sorted out all the papers, forms, ect. we've received from the University since spring. I came across a sheet about "helicopter parents". Yes, we've heard of them. S makes most of his own choices and decsions, but this caught my eye. It gave tips about parents/kids adjusting to college. Also included were a couple book titles:

"Letting go : a parents' guide to understanding the college years" by Karen Levin Coburn & Madge Lawrence Treeger.

"Don't tell me what to do, just send money : the essential parenting guide to the college years" by Helen E. Johnson and Christine Schelhas-Miller.

I'm getting both books from my local library. I think it's gonna help ease my anxiety about this whole new part of my life. Am just passing along the titles in case any others might benefit from reading them.

I just finished reading “The Happiest Kid on Campus: A Parents’ Guide to the Very Best College Experience” by Harlan Cohen. I would highly recommend it. I insisted that my D read the book that he wrote for college students entitled “The Naked Roommate and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College.”

I just started reading “Don’t Tell Me What To Do.” I have “Letting Go” on reserve at the our library.

I, too, am worried about my D (an only child) starting college.

57beach, thanks for the additional book title, I’ve placed a hold on it as well at my library.

I only wish I’d heard of these books a few months ago but I’m sure their insight is gonna help me.

I can recommend a great book-also available on Kindle:
Writin’ on Empty…when children leave the nest.
by Julie Reynolds
Great insights, some humorous and some thought-provoking.
