My son is attending top 20 high school in CA. His stat is
GPA: 3.85/4.08(weighted), only top 25%
SAT: 2290, Subject: Math:800, Chem:800, Bio (molecular):790
PSAT: 225
He plays sports, music, and some volunteer jobs.
He is interested in Bio/Med. We would like him to get into a good college but not as crazy as his high school. Please advice. Thanks!

Since he plans to go to Medical School, you want to keep the cost of Undergrad as low as possible. The UC’s would all have good Biology programs. He has very good scores. He needs to calculate his UC GPA, see link: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
I would have him apply to UCLA/UCB/UCSD/UCI/UCD/UCSB. He may be eligible for Regents with his PSAT/SAT score and the UC’s will give him decent FA in needed. He also might want to consider some Privates where he would be eligible for merit aid such as USC, Occidental, University of San Diego. Your son has many options but you need to run the NPC (Net Price Calculator) for each school he is interested in to compare your possible FA.
Good Luck.

Key thing about med school admissions is that he should attend a school/major where he can achieve a high GPA Since his SAT scores are so high, he will probably do well anywhere.

Keep in mind that getting into UC medical schools (even as in-state) is incredibly difficult. For this reason it might be better to look at smaller LACs where he can do well, get personal letters of recc, and still get top grades.

I wouldn’t actually suggest LA or Berkeley. Both are extremely competitive for pre meds and smart kids will get weeded out. They are great schools but not at all nurturing for an aspiring doctor.

Thanks all for your inputs. We will definitely have those UCs covered because it is a single application. If he gets accepted by top UCs then it is fine. If not then we have to go private.
Under plus med school will cost a lot for private since we are not qualified for any FA. That’s why we are searching for a school that is worth this investment. Any suggestion for good schools match his stats in east/west coast that will prepare you well for med school? Thanks.
