Does your child need financial aid? And what is approximate class rank? You are applying yo a bunch of state schools; are you is for all? (I know sometimes people are intl and still qualify for instate residency.)

You may want to check this old thread

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/417391-computer-science-lac-2.html

and check post 20.

One question to help clarify the question is what kind of an academic environment does he want for studying CS? One with a heavy engineering/techie bent or a broader liberal-arts one?

If the former, I’d add Harvey Mudd and Olin College of Engineering to the LAC list.

Here is the old thread:

My son is interested in Computer Science. In my search of mid size and small LAC schools in the east coast, the list is:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Duke
Brown
Washington University
Northwestern
John Hopkins
Georgetown
Tufts
Williams & Mary
Geneseo
Fordham
Quinnipiac

LACs
Amherst
Swarthmore
Williams
Wesleyan
Oberlin
Haverford
Brandeis
Bucknell
Vassar
Colgate
Lafayette
Union

for computer science
Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Stanford and Berkeley should be on your list - they are regularly listed as the top four programs for computer science. They all have fine engineering programs too. Caltech is also worth looking into, but it’s so tiny and quirky a visit is probably in order to see if it’s a good fit. I am assuming you have UC’s for safety schools?

My older son who is now at Google went to Carnegie Mellon. He made great contacts there, loved the techie atmosphere of having a stand alone school of computer science and had great internships every summer.

UMass Amherst has a good CS department. I was going to add Carnegie Mellon too.

Look at the US News and World Reports rankings of grad schools in comp sci, math and other subjects. Consider the top twenty schools and research those schools’ websites. Then consider other factors such as climate, atmosphere, activities et al to narrow the list. Do not let prestige misguide you.

Add the University of Wisconsin-Madison to the list for a public U in these fields. Many college freshmen will change their major. UW has a good Honors program with opportunities to take grad level courses in several fields, work in labs…

You aren’t going to get financial aid from the public universities if the child is not a US citizen. If you need it, you need a completely different list.

“compmom” important information

@mathmom
thanks a lot!
bump!!!

bump!!!

soochow - do you need financial aid? That is a crucial question.

@katliamom
We need FA. But it may be a dream!
My DD wants to go the university with list no less than 50 on USNEWS
OR LAC no less than 30
So it is difficult for us to get FA

Is your DD an international student? That would make a big difference in terms of admissions/financial aid. If a US citizen, a number of of the schools that would be on her list are needblind in admission and some guarantee to meet full need. If not, the chances go down drastically. Some school do not give aid to international students at all, so it’s a zero % chance of admissions/aid at such school and they should be dropped from your DD"s list. CMU might be such a school, for example, that does not give fin aid to international students.

@cptofthehouse
as your suggestion
we have two sorts of Universities and LACS.
maybe with FA
without any FA
