I'm currently a sophomore and will be finishing my sophomore year at the end of May.
I have considered taking the SAT in October of my Junior year but many of my friends are suggesting that I should take the PSAT in October and do the real SATs in January of 2013.

Any suggestions? I did the PSATs once in October 2011. I'm pretty confident that I can nail >700 for both Writing and Math but my CR score seems to be stuck around a 62-650. Any suggestions on when I should do the test?

Is it a good idea to do it in October 2012 or wait until Jan 2013? I'm just really puzzled because I wanna finish the SATs soon but not rush into it either.

You can easily take the PSAT and the SAT in October. For what it’s worth, it’s not that much of a time commitment. Make sure you learn grammar and reading stuff over summer, so you’re ready because these things have a way of sneaking up on you (says a Junior who is getting nervous about AP testing in one - two weeks).

If you take the SAT in October, you can prepare for the SAT and the PSAT at the same time. Also, I believe that October is one of the few months for which you can get your SAT Qs and As (for an extra $18 or so) to help you prepare for a retake if you’d like. Check the College Board website to see the dates for which this is currently offered.

teteatete,
The PSAT scores, for some reason, only arrive at my school around December although the tests are in October. So that basically means taking the PSAT will no longer give me an indication of how I might perform on the SAT if I do them in the same month.

Good luck with your APs… I’ve got one coming up and I’m slacking off like I’ve got nothing to worry about in the world.

Thank you for the suggestions, teteatete and schokolade! :)

I would recommend taking them in October. That way you can get them out of the way while still allowing time if you need to retake. The PSAT won’t really help you do better on the SAT; taking the SAT in October will actually make you more ready for the PSAT and will allow you to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Hmm sounds good. October it probably is then. God I’m so nervous now…

Im taking the PSAT’s in Ocotber. Then, I’m taking the SAT’s in November. I suggest you do that, but you should do whatever fits your schedule.

Actually I would take it like before Jan. or June. Why June? You’ll learn more stuffs. but if it is down to Jan vs Oct- I would say take it on October because sometime winter have a dangerous effect on students…

I thought of doing the November or December one but then I wouldn’t see my PSAT score before I take the SATs. Could that effect my outcome? :S

Seeing your PSAT score won’t make much of a difference. If you want to get an idea of how you’ll do, then take a practice test from the blue book.

Yeh I’m pretty much going for PSAT October and SAT Oct or Nov :)

Hey, guys, I was seriously about to ask the same question!

So my current scores are around 2050s. My goal is to score 2200+ first try on the SAT. Would it be a risk to try sign up for october?

kimmylouie, if you study over the summer you’ll be fine. Three months is more than enough to study for the SAT.
