suggestions for a fourth option

Hello....I am a high school student, going into senior year. ACT score = 34, SAT = 2170 (720 reading, 760 writing, 690 math)...At this time I am not sure what my major will be. I would like to stay in the midwest, and I am looking for a school where a serious student will thrive. The schools I am considering are: University of Chicago, Lawrence University, and Knox College. Any suggestions for midwest schools that would be similar in atmosphere?

Look at Washington University in St. Louis, Northwestern, Carleton, University of Wisconsin - Madison, U Michigan Ann Arbor, Notre Dame, Macalester, Beloit College, Illinois Wesleyan.

UIUC, if you are interested in engineering. There is a lot of partying, but the student population is huge so there's a place for everyone. The college of engineering there is excellent and rewards hard workers.

kalamazoo?

grinnell, kenyon, earlham, oberlin

Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Northwestern

If you like the University of Chicago, you'd probably like LACs more than state schools (although they offer solid academics, they tend to have more of the party school atmosphere). I second Carleton, Grinnell, Northwestern, Oberlin, Macalester, etc.

I will definitely push Carelton, Macalester, and Grinell as options. Just from observing the campuses and environments you've selected, I'm not sure if I'd recommend big states (UIUC, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.) or large privates dominated/polarized by greek life (Northwestern, Notre Dame). Though arguements can probably be made for Michigan and Northwestern, neither seem to fit the signs of preference you have given.

Notre Dame, Louisville, Marquette

U Chicago sounds like your best fit, and with good essays, you should be admitted. I agree with the suggestions about the top LACs- Carleton, Grinnell, Illinois Wes, Oberlin, etc. You may get merit aid from the LACs. Wash U sounds like a good fit also. Many people who like U Chicago also like U Rochester, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, and Barnard, but they are out of your geographical area. You seem like the sort of person who would also do well at a good but more social school (Northwestern, Notre Dame). You would probably just gravitate toward other serious students.

Chicago is hot.....

daisy, you have time to visit these schools since they are all close by Chicago and I strongly encourage you to do so. Lawrence sounds like a particularly good fit because of your interest in English and music. They also have a sizable substance free dorm that could give you the environment you are looking for. Knox has a larger greek system than Lawrence so it may be a little livelier than what you are looking for, but I visited and thought it was a fine school. Kalamazoo has no greek system and a very intellectual reputation. Carleton, Mac, St. Olaf, Earlham and the Ohio schools are all a little farther away but are also great alternatives.

Good luck to you. With your stats and your interests I have to say that you are in a great location because there are so many fine LACs nearby as well as the U of Chicago.

This may be splitting hairs, but Notre Dame has no Greek system. They're still social, but not Greek.

Point taken Dorian, but I'm not sure how you classify Notre Dame's gender split fraternal housing system with guys your spend most of four years breathing, eating, drinking, and sleeping with (and from my recollection, get a lil' high with too).

I'll admit the Delta Kappa Epsilon is not on the front door of Notre Dame's halls...but the "unique Notre Dame fraternal housing" system and Greek system both set a tone of campus living that I don't think the OP is looking for.

Oh, no, I agree with that. I'm just being obnoxious.
