Suggestions for an Average Student

I'm helping my brother out with the college search process, however I am struggling to think of schools for him to apply to. He'd like to be somewhat urban (or at least not rural), but other than that does not have many preferences, although I think he'd probably be happier on the West Coast. He is definitely into the alternative scene - he wears a lot of flannel, doesn't get many haircuts, and listens to a lot of music by bands I've never heard of of. He goes to an arts high school where his focus is theater tech, but he doesn't necessarily want to continue that in college.

He has around a 3.25, and his SAT is around a 1600/2400 (we are waiting on the ACT report). I know there are good schools out there for someone with his profile, however I was looking at a very different set of schools (I wanted rural and East Coast), so I have no idea what I should really be considering.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi - you do not mention what year your brother is in - or will be in come next September. Also, what kind of school is he coming from/ Honors classes? What were his electives? Would it be beneficial for him to take a year off? Could he do internships in that year/ What is his financial status - does he have a school savings account? How interested are your parents? Will they support his college costs?
All brothers should of course have a sister like yours, nice to hear it.

A lot of the state schools in California are really good and sounds like he has good chances there. They also seem to fit the ‘vibe’ he’s going for. Similarly, a couple of the CUNY schools seem to fit the bill.

University of California Davis
University of California San Francisco
CUNY Stony Brook
CUNY Purchase

Good luck.
