Suggestions for AP Comp Sci?

This is my worst AP so far D:

No matter what I try to review, I always seem to get around 21/40 MC right. I'm fine with the FRQ, but the MC annoys me to no end.

Either there's always this one thing I just happen to forget/ not notice, which messes me up. Or I am unable to logically go through the code because I just lose track of it in my head.

Any help?

Write variable values as you read through the code. Set up a table for For loops. Don’t over think it. Do you have a prep book? I have a Baron’s one. I was prevented from taking the test by my school, but I found it very useful.

I’m using Be Prepared for the AP Comp Sci Exam in Java. My teacher said it was slightly harder than the test. Also, I think it’s just the fact that I don’t have a extremely good grasp on the special ideas, such as polymorphism, abstraction, information hiding, encapsulation, etc.

I also have a problem with searching code, like binary and merge. Anything for that?

I think you just need to master those concepts. If you can identify topics that you have trouble with then you just need to continue to review and practice them to hone your skills. I use the same book and I have not found it to be particularly difficult, so getting 21/40 on that test is probably like a 25/40 on the real deal. Barron’s on the other hand is crazy hard – a 21/40 on that could easily be a 31/40 on the real test. At least, that’s as far as I’ve seen – I ususally get about a third of the Barron’s questions wrong but ace the Litvin’s and released collegeboard exams.

I supplemented Be Prepared with Barrons, which worked really well for reviewing. As for following the logic of the code, I always wrote what was going on in the margin if I was having trouble following it, such as temporary variable and loop values, and the like.

I took the AB exam, and it was a lot easier than I expected.

I haven’t started studying, and I’m doing this as a self-study. Although, I do feel like I know Java pretty well (I have some pretty large personal projects), and I’ve looked at some Java computer science stuff through OCW. Would I be able to do well on the test?

I think Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java (Litvin) has harder practice tests than Barron’s. On the Barron’s practice tests, I usually get 30/40, but on the Litvin one, I get around 20/40. I also took a College Board Practice Test (2008 Audit) in my class and got 33/40 on the MC and about the same on the FR. How is the real test like? Will I get a 5 based on how I did on the College Board/Barron’s tests?

Not sure… I’m surprised you found Barron’s harder than Litvin’s though. If I were you I would order the released 2009 exam and see what score you get. I usually don’t do so well on the Barron’s exam but I got a 39/40 on the 2009 exam with 1 careless error.
