Hello, I just received my letter of rejection today and was so sad.. I realize that they discourage you to appeal, but I will take any last measure to try to get in. My friend has the same GPA as me (we're both 2nd year transfers), but she got accepted. But, she does have a higher high school gpa.
I am an art major with a 3.40 gpa (3.33 before winter quarter, since winter quarter doesn't count) transferring out of UCSC with a strong focus in fashion, and see LA as somewhere with much more opportunity to be involved in fashion and make the right connections with the fashion world.

Here are some things I would like to note on my letter of appeal.
- My grades senior yr of hs.. sounds ridiculous, but upon seeing my high school transcript this year b/c I had to send a copy for the art supplement, I don't remember receiving such bad grades (several C's), and believe that if I ever received a C, I would feel disappointed in myself..
-Freshman yr of college, I didn't realise the importance of my grades & performance.. It was only until I realised what I want to do with my skills that I felt motivated to work a lot harder.
-What it will mean for me to be in LA as an art major, and visiting UCLA being impressed by the art program, and the artwork I saw there.

I just really hope they reconsider me.. Any suggestions?

that’s a toughie because grades for the art major are not really a thing. i got in as an art major with a mediocre gpa. i know that you go through two screenings, first the portfolio review (which you have to pass in order to even be considered) and then you have to be admitted into the school as a whole (this is where they focus on your academic record). That said, if you do decide to appeal, and like why not? it would not hurt, mention that you’d like to re-submit a portfolio. also, if fashion is your emphasis then i don’t think ucla’s art program would be the right fit for you, the art school itself places a strong emphasis on dialogue and the development of ideas. none of the courses are really design based or at least that’s not the vibe that it gave me. I’d honestly suggest looking at cal states (i hear l.a. is really good for fashion) or even trade schools like FIDM. good luck to you! this actually might be a blessing in disguise for you because i think if you are really committed to learning fashion design that you’ll be immensely better off elsewhere.

Thanks for the reply!
I heard that the art department is very difficult to get into at ucla, according to statistics… That VERY few get in. Even though I am very into fashion, since I want to graduate with an art degree as soon as I can, I am more focused on developing my artistic skills (painting, drawing, etc)… How are the art classes for you, at ucla? UCSC doesn’t have enough classes relating to what I want to do… Do they have a watercolor or illustration class there? I’ve always wanted to take one.
I will look into cal states… Honestly, I’m not obsessed with academic ranking and am more concerned about location, and the quality of the art program/relevance to what I am focusing on. I just really wanted to be in LA because it’s a fashion capital!!
What is UCLA looking for in a portfolio? I mostly submitted paintings of nude models, fashion designs, and a few paintings I did in the past… So I’m not sure what i could do if I resubmit! But I’ll do whatever it takes…

oh, don’t feel too bad the art departments are all really tough. i would appeal, i mean what do you have to lose? but you would need to be willing to accept a second rejection.

if you resubmit any art, make sure you ONLY submit work you really love. they even specify this on their site, as i recall. less is more in this regard.

also, you might consider waiting another year and reapplying to another department. if you do appeal, check out “Ms. Sun’s Blog” she has great appeal tips. just google it, Ms. Sun also posts on here. good luck!

northbeach:
I checked the blog, but I only saw a page where you have to pay for the services… I am considering retouching my current works, since most of my work is inaccessible to me now (left in storage, & you know it’s so difficult to travel when at ucsc).
