My son has a 27 ACT and a 3.5 GPA with a couple of AP and multiple honors classes. He has volunteer hours and runs track and cross-country (but will not run in college).
We live in Colorado. Our EFC is $14k and we have approximately $50k currently saved for college.
He is not necessarily sure about his major and would like to go to school OOS if possible.
RIT has video game design
Hampshire (but has terrible financial aid) but it never hurts to try. Boys are needed there.
Sarah Lawrence has dig arts, near NYC for potential internships, and needs boys really badly and they may toss him aid
University of Utah has a top program, not sure of cost
A test-prep company that is named after a famous Ivy college in New Jersey has a list of their ranked programs for game design. You may want to look into those.
Seems like any school with a decent computer science department that offers courses in graphics and artificial intelligence along with the usual important computer science courses, plus course offerings in art, animation, physics, and creative writing, should be a reasonable academic fit.

EFC means little/nothing at most schools.
Most schools give little aid, particularly schools that admit “average students”. What are you prepared to pay each year?
$14k + $12k (savings) per year ($26k)? More? Less?
Have you run the NPCs on various schools’ websites to see what schools would expect you to pay?
Is he wanted a Video Game Design major that’s within a Computer Science program? How strong is he in math?
He’s quite strong in math. He took Calculus AB as a junior and will take Calculus BC as a senior. I have run NPC at all the schools we’re considering, and based on current/projected savings, I’m looking at schools that are approx. $25k/year. I only provided the EFC to give you an idea of our financial situation. I was simply hoping that someone might have some insight into schools that we hadn’t thought of.
@iamgriffinsmom - Texas A&M has one of the top game-design and animation programs in the Country. http://one.arch.tamu.edu/news/2015/5/4/texas-m-uss-top-animation/

Trivia: A number of A&M visualization graduates work for Pixar, and because of that, the character of Sully in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University was named after Lawrence “Sully” Sullivan Ross, an early president of the university. Also, a building in Monsters University is a replica of the Academic Building.
