Hi, I am looking for an audition piece that is pre 1960. I am a high soprano. I can sing up do a C or D above the staff. I can also sing down to a B below middle C. My contrasting post 1960 up tempo song is "This Place is Mine," from Phantom: The American Musical. I need a pre-1960 ballad and if anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Anything by George Gershwin. Also take a look at Noel Coward’s songs. Both of these composers wrote many songs for sopranos. Other pre-60 composers to look at are Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter.

My son picks out audition songs for all of his friends and has a very good track record getting them callbacks…the ones who listen to him anyway! Based on the parameters you gave he recommended Make the Man Love Me from A Tree Grows In Brooklyn which opened in 1951. Other songs that fit the bill include I’ve Never Been in Love Before from Guys & Dolls; Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered from Pal Joey, You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel; Simple Joys of Maidenhood from Camelot (this is 1960, though) but they may be overdone and it would depend on what you were auditioning for if he would recommend you consider them. He also admits he does not know your contrasting piece but he is somewhat familiar with Phantom, more so with Maury Yeston. These are just from what he had on his Ipod, you are sure to find many more options. Hope you find something you like!
