Suggestions for Comp Sci. Grad Program

Hi.

My friend, who is an international applicant from India, is looking to see if there are any grad schools in America that would be good for his stats. He can afford ~$10,000 per year.

His GPA is 2.75, and his GRE is a 291.

He already got into Northwestern Politechnical University and South Dakota State University. Out of these two, which would you recommend more?

Thanks.

I would be concerned about this NPU in Fremont. Although there are many uni’s in the US so it is hard to know about all of them, I have lived in the Bay Area and in CA and never heard of it and my child is a cs student for undergrad and grad. There is almost no information about it on the web, the price is too low for the Bay Area and it is completely unranked by US News. I don’t know. It is in the right locaiton, maybe it is a niche thing. At least SDSU is a reputable state U with a low price because it is in a cheap area. I would feel much more comfortable with that.

Northwestern Polytechnic is different from Northwestern Polytechnical, OP. The latter is in China.

I’m also wary of it given that it’s not a school I’m familiar with, but your friend needs to ask some questions. Who goes to NPU? Where do they get jobs after graduation? Who comes to recruit on campus? What are the career services like there?

Just poking around the website, there’s little information about their curricula. The faculty in the engineering department at least seem to come from reputable PhD programs - Harvard, Ohio State, McGill, UIUC, etc. There’s no information that I can find about career services and recruiting, which is strange because they advertise themselves as having connections and placements in Silicon Valley. This university is pinging most of my red flags.

SDSU you know is a reputable university. I’d ask some questions about career placement, though.

Thank you everyone. I will recommend him SDSU, though inform him that it would be better if he studies in India.
