Hello,
My senior's last day in high school was today. She's got all her necessary credits and has been accepted to two colleges and is awaiting word from four others. She is planning on working two jobs and taking a math class at the local community college until college in the spring (not entirely necessary but thought it would be helpful as she only has three years of math). My question is, is there something we're not thinking of that would make this time great or even life-changing for her? Are there peace corps programs, mission trips or anything else that you've heard of kids doing with this time? Thanks for any suggestions!

Just to clarify, will she be starting school as a freshman in the fall of 2013? Your post says she will be taking a math course at the cc (I would assume this would be the spring 13 semester) until she starts in the spring.

I’m not clear on how much time she has, either, but my suggestion would be to look into outdoor travel adventures. Backpacking in the U.S. as well as in other countries provides a unique experience that helps kids get to know themselves as well as gain perspective. She would have a lot of time to think, learn some skills and gain confidence and a sense of independence that will serve her well no matter what she decides to do in life. It doesn’t matter so much where she goes. It could be Arcadia National Park in Maine, the John Muir Trail, trekking the Inca Trail in Peru, or anywhere that sounds fun to her. It’s just being in nature with a few companions and everything you need to survive on your back that makes the experience life-changing.

And if she’s “not an outdoorsy kind of girl”, I’d double this suggestion! :)

Sorry - meant college in the fall and math class between now and then.
