Suggestions for high school ec's?

im going to be a 10th grader this august, and I plan to become more active. In my freshman year, i've been in an environmental club, a club spending time with orphans, operation smile, and my first go at model united nations.
i've just been trying to get a feel of these clubs, and since i plan to go on and be a doctor, would it be possible for me to volunteer at a hospital (I don't need to get paid)?
any suggestions for interesting ec's, or leadership positions?
student council is not a possibility as we have to attend all events that take place at school, and it is around 2 hours from my house, so transportation is a problem. sports I'm not so passionate about, so I'm not really considering that.

Well... You'll know what's around you better than any of us. Try volunteering, or even a part time job. Or start a club. Try to go on teams, or make your own! Anything you'd like to do in high school is fine.

Im also gonna be a sophomore this fall and im volunteering at a hospital right now, its a lot of fun and you can get a lot of hours if you do it right, by the end of this summer i should have around 70 or so hours for my first year there

there's a thread somewhere on this forum that had a list of great extracurriculars...i can't find it though.

What EC's are interesting depends on what you're interested in.
I'd vote for starting a nethack club, because everyone's interested in that. :D
you could be president, and founder!

I've volunteered at my hospital for the past two years and it's been great. When I started I wasn't interested in a medical career now I know that I want nothing else. I've volunteered in Physical/Occupational Therapy, Post-Anesthesia, Surgical Recovery floor, and the Volunteer Office delivering flowers and such. Definitely think about volunteering, you won't regret it.

You're going to get a million people telling you to do what enjoy, and you'll probably blow them all off, because I know that I used to. I've found that it really works though. I used to say, "Oh, I can help campaign for the next presidential election, join the Model UN, study Arabic, and raise money for political causes that I believe in, blah, blah, blah..." I thought all of these would help me to get into a really cool college with a great international relations program, but whenever I tried to actually DO the things I intended, I had a hard time being motivated, because I didn't actually care about them, I just thought that they'd look good on my college applications. (I also realized that I'm too much of a push-over to ever have a career in politics.)

Long story short: Do what you like.

I spend all my time doing art now, because that's what I'm passionate about, and I hope that adcoms will realize this. I still am involved in other clubs but not just to fill up space on my resume.
