DS is interested in industrial design after attending summer programs at Ball State and College for Creative Studies. GPA 3.7 ACT 31 SAT 1880. 3 AP classes as these are limited in our school district. EC includes Boy Scout service projects, have been in the high school band (marching, wind ensemble, jazz) and continues to play in the local university's youth symphonic orchestra, editor in chief of school newspaper but nothing extra ordinary. Played one sport sophomore year but had to quit due to injury. I would greatly appreciate suggestions on schools in the midwest and Atlantic states. We've looked at Univ. of Cincinnati, Carnegie Mellon (a reach), U of Michigan. We are planning to look at RISD, Pratt, College for Creative Studies, and Cleveland Art Institute. I was wondering if anyone can comment on his chances of getting in in anyone of these. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

D attends DAAP at Cincinnati. Great program with excellent Coop opportunities. She chose DAAP over RISD, RIT, Illinois, and Purdue. Your son’s GPA and ACT should be competitive for DAAP.

At mets, the Coop is what got Son interested. How competitive is admission? Did you visit all the schools you’ve mentioned and how were they? Will visit RISD if we get a reply since this maybe a long shot for him, distance-wise as well…

Take a look at Virginia Tech. Is your son in-state for U of M?

North Carolina State University
[Industrial Design | design.ncsu.edu](Industrial Design | College of Design)

Entry into the College of Design is competitive. You must have a portfolio and there is an interview process.

@Consolation, yes DS will be in-state for U of M. The school of art and design looks like it is a general degree that ID is not really a major, which might be fine for undergrad. Unfortunately, NCSU may be geographically out of reach. We would like him to stay closer to the upper mid-Atlantic states bc relations live there in case he misses home…

Kendall College of Art & Design at Ferris State in Grand Rapids?
[Industrial Design | Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University](http://www.kcad.edu/programs/undergraduate/industrialdesign/)

Does anyone have any thoughts on Kendall? e.g. Co op or internship opportunities…

We went through this last year with our son too- found out late in the game that he was very interested in ID. This is what I dug up- some colleges are very portfolio based others are not and some consider the academics on an equal level. U of Cinn does not require a portfolio for example but RISD does. Is there a National Portfolio Day coming up near you? If so, I highly recommend your son take his work to the colleges representatives and get feedback. My S started late but managed to get in at U of Cinn DAPP, Arizona State University (they have a surprisingly well respected ID program) Carnegie Mellon University and an LAC with a strong art dept.). Be very cognizant of the deadlines for portfolio entries. For example, CMU’s CFA dept. requires them very early. Visit the colleges if doable and show lots of interest. BTW, Univ. of Houston has good ID program in the school of architecture.

D was accepted to DAAP, RISD, Purdue, Ilinois, and RIT. She attended summer program at RISD. Visited all the others. She chose DAAP primarily for Coop system and hi ranking. DAAP was #1 in ID. Coop network is great. They assist students obtain respected and PAID coops. Please feel free to PM me if questions.

what are the differences between the program that Stanford has for industrial design and the industrial design for RISD and Brown because I am thinking about double major. Also, how hard is it to get into both programs and what are the requirements?
