suggestions for low-key college in nice town

my son wants to go to a low key (easy to get into) college in a nice town - atmosphere is important! mountains nearby a plus - looking for suggestions - act 21 gpa 2.9 needs a school with good academic support where he will be encouraged to do his best - thanks!

UNC-Asheville is said to be a good school that is fun. Asheville is a nice smaller city near mountains.

Don’t know about your GPA/SAT, however. You would be well advised to get both of them up before applying anywhere.

Hmm, there are two mountain ranges in the contiguous United States; if nearby mountains and low admissions standards are the only criteria, I would suggest he check out all schools along the Rocky Mountain and Appalachian ranges. If he has more specific interests beyond geographic proximity to mountains, perhaps I could offer better advice.

jjjane, don’t know what part of the country you and your son are wanting. How about looking to see if majors he might be interested in are available at: Champlain College in VT (you have Burlington right there), Elmira College in NY, High Point College in NC, LeMoyne College, Western New England College (MA), Hartwick College? Don’t know about the mountains, but VT, NY, have skiing if that is what he wants.

get ur socres up else you will be looking for a community college in wyoming

Some responders are trying to be helpful, but some of you are being unkind. jjjane is obviously asking for her child who has a GPA and ACT that are concordant and may well represent her child’s best efforts. Not everyone can get their scores and grades up to cc standards.

completely untrue leek13. If you gave me 10 minutes I could find dozens of colleges that will accept a boy w/ 2.9 and a 21. Play nice or don’t post please.

jjane off the top of my head I can suggest Northern Arizona University and Western State in Gunnison Colorado. But as other posters have indicated more info would be helpful.

Also, please know that an ACT score of 21 is an average ACT score, just not an average score on this website.

A couple of others: Susquehanna ¶, and Roger Williams (RI).

i was very impressed with Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. I think it has a lot to offer.
Western State is another nice school- smaller. The town isn’t much, but it’s very close to Crested Butte ski resort.

Look at Western Carolina in Cullowhee, NC (about 40 minutes west of Asheville.) Your S’s GPA/ACT scores make for a very good match/safety. My S attended their open house last fall and we met many of the professors, all of whom seemed very dedicated to undergrad education and helping their students succeed.

It’s in the mountains and the college itself was very nice, with a new performing arts center and student union (Einstein Brothers Coffee Shop made my H very happy.) It is certainly not a school full of agressive, over-achievers.

Another school to consider, which may be more of a reach than a match, is Applachian State in Boone, NC. Great town, laid back students, wonderful mountains to explore.

I second Colorado State…I’ve heard Fort Collins is a great college town…but not a small school…

Cant believe I didn’t mention Carroll College in Helena Montana. Helena is a nice small city, there is an active outdoor club that leads man mountain orriented activities. Mid act range 21-26 and though 2.9 is in the lower 25% it’s at the high end of the lower 25%

Western Carolina would work and they are getting better every year. App state and u-Ashville won’t work with a 21.

If you want a lot of support look into Landmark College in Vermont.

I’ve heard good things about Regis University in Denver.

Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Not religious.

Appalachian St. in NC

champlain college is in burlington vermont, a great college town

Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pa. Beautiful Central Pa. mountains, low-key LAC, good academics. Not far from Penn State University Park. Great recreational atmosphere.

Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. The town is quite music-y, and I think the area has good hiking trails and skiing.

University of Idaho might be a good fit.
