Although some students may be going for humanitarian relief efforts, my own take is that most are going for study and research opportunities. And even those going for humanitarian purposes are often actually conducting research or study in their fields at the same time. One of my older son’s friends spent time in Africa one semester assisting communities in dealing with AIDS. But the primary driver of the trip was medical research.
