Suggestions for rounding out schedule?

Hi guys!

I'm going to be a CoC freshman this coming semester. I'm still pretty stuck on what courses to choose; I've cleared my R&C requirements, and I'll be done with AC by the time the semester starts, so I'm having trouble figuring out what to pick.

I'm currently enrolled in:
CHEM 4A - Gen. Chem. & Quant. Analysis (4 units)
CHEM C96 - Intro to Research Seminar (1 unit)
CHEM 98W - Directed Study Group (1 unit)
MATH 53 - Multivariable Calc. (4 units)

I'm somewhat interested in applying to medical school sometime down the road, so I was considering taking some sort of English/CompLit class (perhaps English 45A - Lit. in English through Milton?) just to get that requirement out of the way. But I've also had people tell me it might be too much to handle, and my roommate suggested that I take something easier (e.g. NutriSci 10) instead.

So what do you guys think? Oh, and any general advice or course suggestions would be awesome too. :)

Take history, poli sci, Classics, or a <insert ethnic,=“” afam,=“” asam,=“” etc.=“”> Studies Course just because it sounds interesting. I say this because people tend to put themselves into a one-two subject box. ie: I’m a math major so I’ll only take math classes and take easy breadth requirements P/NP because it has nothing to do with my major. That mindset really does you a disservice. I’m a poli sci major and I had refused to consider more serious math/science courses, which was really foolish of me.</insert>

There’s also music/psychology/sociology/econ if you want to take something more practical.
Philosophy is also good if you want to use the right brain to do some opposite style of thinking from those chem and math courses.

Seems like Physics 7A, Math 54, and/or breadth course(s) would be the most likely candidates to add to your course list.

You should be able to defer pre-med decisions for a semester or few, since you are already ahead in math and R&C (which means three elective slots later). This will give you time to research medical schools’ pre-med requirements and what they accept for the “English” category (they may vary), or decide whether or not to actually do pre-med.

Math 53 and 54…simultaneously?

Maybe they were just trying to scare us at orientation, but I’m not sure if I can handle that much right now. I haven’t touched calculus or physics since junior year, but according to my friend, I should be fine in 53. Physics though…ugh.

Out of curiosity, would any of your suggestions be different if I said I was interested in taking on the GPP minor as well? I’ve been told that it would definitely tighten up my schedule, but I’m not really sure as to what extent.

I highly recommend 54 or 7A as well. 3 technicals is not too bad, and it’s a huge advantage to be done with math and physics super early. Many people even take 4 technicals, so 3 is quite manageable.

And being done with math in one semester (instead of 4) would allow you to have an extra GPP class or something else in the next three semesters.
