Hi, I absolutely love Rice, but for me I think it's a reach school.
I was wonderful if there are any other schools very similar to rice or at least have a similar student body, but could be safeties for me?

my gpa is 3.8 and my act is a 30; I retook the act, but I don't know the score yet.
I got a 730 on the math 2, and i plan to take bio m and us history in october

Other schools I've been looking at are either in California or the Northeast, but so far I've haven't seen anything as great as Rice.
any suggestions??

What do you find so appealing about Rice? What’s your home state? How much can your family afford?

Depends on what you want to major in. I think the second best school in Texas behind Rice is Trinity University. Trinity is smaller than Rice but has a similar student body. Trinity is also a city school (San Antonio instead of Houston). Trinity also has one of the largest endowments per student similar to Rice.

One thing that I read about Rice is this:
“Students work hard, and this is certainly not a party school at all, but it does have a good balance in its warm, down-to-earth feel. Students are accessible and not pretentious. It has a good quirky feel, welcoming, with lots of interpersonal diversity on campus.”

i love that rice seems to be very academic yet not overly competitive. I love how the people sound, and the overall vibe. I like how the students are hardworking and do not party much, yet there are parties. I’m not very into sororities, so that is also a plus. I also love how it’s so close to a city.
My hometown is Chicago, Illinois
price for me isn’t much of an issue

The kids at my school who apply to Rice usually also apply to Trinity and Southwestern if they’re not doing engineering. You could try looking at some more selective LAC’s in California and the northeast, or even in the north-central (Carleton, Macalester, Grinnell, etc.) States. I think those would give you a more similar environment to Rice than other private universities.

For safeties, consider public universities in your home state, or perhaps some of the CTCL schools ([Colleges That Change Lives | Changing Lives. One Student at a Time.](http://www.ctcl.org/)). For “match” schools, check out Case Western, Rochester, and Brandeis (small universities located in/near cities; good academic reputations; less selective than Rice).

University of Puget Sound has many “Rice” like qualities including a friendly student body, and a special interest housing system. It’s in a suburb of Seattle and would likely give you a nice deal of merit aid. Though greek life at UPS is popular, it’s non traditional in that someone from nearby UWashington would find little in common with how the system is set up there.

Occidental is one of the most ethnically diverse LACs out there and gives pretty good financial aid. It’s in the middle of LA which means getting off campus is very easy.

Your intended major? If it is engineering then that will help you focus the search…
